Nuclear power has a number of advantages as well as disadvantages. For one thing, nuclear energy is economical and the cost of electricity from a nuclear-power plant is less than that from a coal-fired plant. Besides, nuclear power plants do not bum organic fuels and save valuable raw materials such as coal, oil, gas for other uses. They do not pollute the atmosphere with combustion by-products, therefore nuclear plants are ecologically cleaner than the conventional ones.

Thermonuclear fusion is the basic energy process of the stars and the sun. There the fusion reaction occurs spontaneously. Now the problem is to make this reaction controllable. Such a reaction can only take place at very high temperatures (about 140 million degrees Celsius). So the problem is how to keep plasma (hot ionized gas) at temperatures which are about ten times the temperature of the sun.

The energy needs of the world are constantly increasing, while the energy sources are decreasing. As a result, it is necessary to look for new sources of energy. At present most of the power is obtained mainly from two sources. They are fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) and the power of water. It should be noted, however, that the generation of electricity by these Conventional means is highly uneconomical and the resources of fossil fuels are limited. Therefore much effort is given to other energy sources.

The safety of nuclear power plants has been of great importance from the very beginning of the development of nuclear reactors. But it has become the focus of the international nuclear community since the Chernobyl accident inl986. Modern standards of nuclear safety ensure reliable operation of all systems at any plant dealing with radioactive materials.

Though the strict safety measures are provided at any nuclear installation, there are some difficulties that have to be faced. There is still a popular fear in the public mind associated with the radiation. The tragic consequences of the most serious reactor malfunctions and accidents are the main reasons for this.

A nuclear reactor is a device where a fission chain reaction produces heat energy for generating electricity. The heat energy is used to produce steam, the mechanical energy of the steam drives the turbines, which generate electrical energy.
